The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has welcomed President John Mahama’s recent announcement of tax waivers on agricultural imports, describing it as a major relief for farmers across the country.

Speaking to Adom News, the Executive Director of the Association, Bismark Owusu Nortey, commended the initiative, calling it long overdue.

He revealed that the PFAG had been advocating for such a policy since 2023 and expressed satisfaction that the President had responded.

“This is what we have been waiting for over the years,” Mr. Nortey said. “It is a welcome move, and we thank President Mahama for being a listening leader.”

However, he stressed that the announcement must lead to concrete action. Mr. Nortey urged the President to collaborate with Parliament to ensure the necessary legal framework is put in place to implement the tax waivers effectively.

“We don’t want this to be a promise that goes unfulfilled,” he cautioned. “We hope the President and his administration will follow through and meet the expectations of farmers across the country.”

President Mahama made the announcement during the launch of the National Agribusiness Dialogue held at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra.

He revealed that his administration intends to waive import duties on agro-processing machinery as part of a broader strategy to support the growth of Ghana’s agribusiness sector.

According to the President, the measure is aimed at reducing production costs, enhancing access to modern agricultural technologies, and encouraging private sector investment in agro-processing.

Mr. Nortey reaffirmed the Association’s support for the policy but emphasized that its success would depend on effective implementation and real impact on the livelihoods of farmers.
