President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential amnesty to 998 prisoners across the country.
This follows recommendations from the Prisons Service Council and consultations with the Council of State.
The decision, announced in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson for the President, on Monday, August 18, 2025, was made in line with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
Out of a total of 1,014 convicts recommended, 998 were approved for amnesty. The beneficiaries include 787 first-time offenders, 87 convicts whose death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment, and 51 prisoners whose life sentences will be commuted to a 20-year definite term.
Others include 33 prisoners who are seriously ill, 36 inmates above 70 years of age, two nursing mothers, and two convicts released through petitions.
The move is expected to help decongest the country’s prisons while giving a second chance to reformed inmates.
