Presbyterian Moderator urges concrete action on Bawku conflict, criticises ‘cosmetic’ measures

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has emphasized the urgent need for effective and concrete measures to address the ongoing conflict in Bawku, with the goal of restoring lasting peace and security in the region.

In his remarks, he expressed concern regarding what he characterized as repetitive verbal commitments from government authorities, advocating instead for sustainable solutions that ensure the safety of residents and foster public trust.

During the ordination of ministerial probationers at the Garrison Methodist Presbyterian Church in Burma Camp, Accra, on Sunday, Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye highlighted the significant impact of the prolonged insecurity in Bawku on the Church’s capacity to provide essential services, particularly in healthcare and education, to the communities affected by the conflict.

“Somewhere last week, the President gave an order that the military accompany people who travel the Bawku road, which tells you that the problem has not been solved. We need to deal with the problem right at its root.

“If we are able to deal with it from the root, we would not be doing this ‘cosmetic’ approach of having students go to school, and then a few weeks after, they have to go back.

“Just a while back, some students were going to school, and a gun was fired into their bus. How do you expect me to let these people go to school? Though it is my school, I cannot assure them of safety.

“But I am confident that if our national leaders, security agencies, and the traditional leaders of the two ethnic groups sit down and work together, there will be peace,” he stated.
