Power restored in Tamale after Energy Minister’s intervention

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor

Power has been fully restored to Tamale and surrounding communities following a swift intervention by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor.

The restoration comes after staff of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and the Volta River Authority (VRA) had earlier withdrawn their services, leaving thousands of residents in darkness.

According to a press release from the Ministry, the Minister’s decisive engagement with key stakeholders played a central role in resolving the issue.

During his visit to the Northern Region, Mr. Jinapor met with the Northern Regional Minister, the Mayor of Tamale, and the management of NEDCo.

He also held discussions with representatives of the Senior Staff Association and Union of NEDCo and VRA, as well as the Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service and the Head of National Security in the region to assess the situation.

The Minister further extended his outreach to traditional authorities, paying courtesy calls to the Gukpenaa Palace, Kuga Naa Palace, and Gbewaa Palace.

These engagements, the Ministry noted, were instrumental in creating dialogue and building mutual understanding.

The Ministry expressed gratitude to the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari Gariba II, for his warm reception and valuable insights, highlighting the crucial role traditional leaders played in ensuring peace and cooperation.

With these interventions, the staff of NEDCo and VRA have rescinded their decision to suspend services, leading to the full restoration of electricity to affected areas. Security agencies remain alert to maintain safety and order.

“We are pleased that the situation has been resolved amicably,” Mr. Jinapor stated. “This is a testament to the power of dialogue and cooperation. We thank all stakeholders for their collaboration in restoring power to the affected areas.”

The Ministry has also appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid acts of aggression towards NEDCo and VRA staff as they resume duties.

“We urge residents to allow the NEDCo and VRA staff to carry out their duties without fear of harassment,” the statement read. “It is crucial that we all work together to maintain a peaceful environment that facilitates the continued delivery of vital services.”

Reaffirming the Ministry’s long-term commitment, Mr. Jinapor assured that steps are being taken to prevent similar disruptions in the future.

“We remain dedicated to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the reliability of our power supply system. Our goal is to prevent further disruptions and to ensure that all Ghanaians have access to stable and reliable electricity,” he said.
