Former Minister of Defence Dominic Nitiwul has said excessive political interference has hindered the government’s efforts to fully resolve the long-standing Bawku conflict.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Nitiwul stated that while he is not disappointed in himself for leaving office without concluding the crisis, a settlement similar to the Dagbon peace process would have been ideal.

“The politics in the Bawku issue is a lot,” he said, stressing that meaningful progress can only be achieved if the matter is depoliticised.

He urged all factions and the public to remain calm and await the release of the committee report led by the Asantehene, expressing hope that it will chart a clear path toward lasting peace in Bawku.

“I will not say that I am disappointed in myself for not resolving the Bawku crisis before leaving office. However, if we had been able to solve the dispute as we did with Dagbon, it would have been a positive outcome. The political dynamics surrounding the Bawku issue are quite complex.

“To resolve a protracted situation like this, we need to remove the politicisation of the matter, which has made it difficult. Before leaving office, Otumfuo was addressing the chieftaincy side while we focused on the security aspect. I urge every Ghanaian, including all factions involved, to be patient until Otumfuo’s committee report is presented by the president. Let us measure our language and exercise patience while we await the committee’s findings,” he added.
