Political parties are not only about winning elections – Prof Nelson Oppong

The Executive Director of the Africa Governance Centre, Prof Nelson Oppong, has urged political parties across Africa to look beyond winning elections and focus on building the nations in which they operate.

Prof Oppong made the remarks while addressing the opening session of the ongoing African Political Parties Summit 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

This inaugural summit has brought together major political parties from across Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, and Latin America.

He stated, “Political parties are not only about winning elections; they are about building nations. We must turn poverty from a persistent challenge into an opportunity for health, prosperity, and shared development.”

Prof Oppong called for greater inclusivity in governance, emphasizing the need to move beyond restricting political participation to the political class and instead recognize everyday Africans as the foundation of political action.

Over the coming days, political leaders will brainstorm and develop strategies to advance Africa’s progress and development, aiming to better address the continent’s challenges.
