The Ghana Police Service has refuted media reports alleging that officers raided the home of the New Patriotic Party’s Bono East Regional Chairman in Techiman, resulting in the death of one person.
In a statement issued on Saturday, August 2, the Police described the claim as false, clarifying that no such raid had been carried out at the residence of Mr. Ibrahim Baba Bukari.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident in question occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 1, around 1:20 a.m., when officers from the Bono East Regional Command responded to intelligence about a robbery in progress.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers spotted a group of suspects attempting to scale a wall to escape.
During the operation, one of the suspects, later identified as Seidu Bukari, sustained gunshot wounds. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead shortly after.
Police investigations revealed that the deceased was a known member of a robbery syndicate that has been terrorising residents of Techiman and nearby communities. The gang is suspected of stealing motorbikes and transporting them to Kumasi for resale.
Seidu Bukari was also wanted in connection with a similar robbery case currently under investigation.
The Police noted that the gang had returned to Techiman that night for another criminal operation when they were intercepted.
A motorbike and other implements believed to have been used by the suspects were retrieved at the scene. A manhunt is currently underway to arrest the remaining gang members who managed to flee.
Subsequent checks confirmed that the house involved in the incident belongs to Mr. Ibrahim Baba Bukari, the Bono East Regional Chairman of the NPP.
However, the Police maintained that the operation was not targeted at the Chairman nor his residence.
To ensure transparency and professionalism, the Inspector-General of Police has deployed a team from the CID Headquarters, the Police Professional Standards Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
