Police recover weapons from abandoned vehicle on Bekwai road

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has begun investigations into a case of unlawful possession of arms and ammunition.

The development comes after personnel from the Kuntanase District Patrol Team intercepted a vehicle loaded with firearms on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

In a statement, the police explained that during a routine patrol on the Aputoagya–Bekwai road, the team noticed a white Toyota Sienta, registration number NR 289-24, parked in a bushy area along the roadside under suspicious circumstances.

Two men believed to be standing near the vehicle and reportedly smoking a substance suspected to be narcotics fled into the bush when they saw the approaching officers.

A chase ensued, but the men managed to escape.

When officers searched the abandoned car, they discovered a cache of weapons and other items thought to be linked to planned criminal activity.

The items included an AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. 29546), a locally manufactured gun, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds each, four packets of AK-47 ammunition containing 25 rounds each, seven additional loose rounds, a pair of Wellington boots, a Huawei smartphone, cowrie shells, a pair of sandals, a Ghana Card, and a temporary driver’s license.

The vehicle has since been impounded at the Kuntanase Police Station, and the retrieved items are being held as exhibits.
