Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, says morale within the Ghana Police Service has seen a significant boost, especially following the resolution of long-overdue promotions.
In 2023, police promotions became a contentious issue, with former IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare facing allegations of undue influence—claims that led to legal action by some officers.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based UTV, IGP Yohuno explained that upon assuming office, he inherited numerous unresolved matters affecting personnel welfare and career progression.
With the backing of President John Mahama, COP Yohuno initiated a transparent and merit-based approach to clear the backlog.
“Senior officers whose promotions were delayed beyond the mandatory three to four years — some even waiting over six years — were thoroughly reviewed by a promotion board,” he stated.
“Now the shoulders of some officers are heavy. They have their freedom and are smiling in their ranks. Their families are also happy because salaries have gone up,” he added.
He further disclosed that many interdicted and dismissed officers were given a second chance under his leadership.
“Some officers were on interdiction for two to three years with no progress. I gave a directive to lift all interdictions lasting more than three months, provided there was no pending court case,” he said.
Dismissal cases were also reviewed, leading to the reinstatement of several officers. Even those who had overstayed their leave of absence were engaged and supported to return to duty.
COP Yohuno reaffirmed his commitment to discipline, capacity building, and improved welfare, all aimed at restoring public confidence in the Police Service.
