Police hunt for tricycle rider who allegedly assaulted officer at Garu checkpoint

The Upper East Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for a commercial tricycle rider, popularly known as aboboyaa, who allegedly attacked a police officer during a stop-and-search operation at Garu.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 6, 2025, when a police patrol team working with Community Protection Assistants (CPAs) mounted a checkpoint along the Garu–Nakpanduri road.

According to a police statement, Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumalia, who speaks for the Regional Command, said the tricycle was loaded with sacks of groundnuts with passengers sitting on top. When officers signaled the rider to stop and park properly for inspection, he reportedly became aggressive, assaulted one of the officers, and fled the scene.

Investigations have since been launched, and police say efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect.

“The Command is making every effort to arrest the tricycle rider and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law,” the statement added.

The police have appealed to residents of Garu and nearby communities to assist with information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest.
