The Eastern Regional Police Command has assured the public, particularly visitors traveling to Akropong for this year’s Odwira Festival, of heightened security before, during, and after the celebrations.
This follows a violent clash at Ahwerease in the Akuapem South Municipality on Wednesday, October 22, which left one person dead and several others injured.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 23, the police said comprehensive security arrangements have been made to ensure a peaceful and incident-free festival.
These include a strict ban on weapons and live ammunition within the durbar grounds and surrounding areas. Only individuals officially authorized to fire musketry will be identified and properly tagged.
Motorbikes will not be permitted beyond the Old Assembly junction in Akropong, with designated parking areas at the Audit Service premises, the Old Court, Shoe Fabrique, the Municipal Assembly, Dachie Junior School, and Christ Church Park.
All festival activities, including the traditional Amaprobi procession, will be held during daylight hours to ensure maximum security presence.
To ease traffic congestion, travelers are advised to use alternative routes such as the Ofankor–Pokuase–Nsawam and Dodowa–Somanya–Adukrom roads, rather than the Ayi-Mensah–Aburi–Mamfe stretch.
Police visibility will be increased across major highways, Akropong township, and the durbar grounds. The command warned that any acts of disorder or violence will be met with decisive action.
Meanwhile, 34 suspects arrested in connection with the Ahwerease clash have been arraigned before the Mampong Magistrate Court as investigations continue.
The Police Command urged residents and visitors to cooperate fully with law enforcement to ensure a safe and peaceful Odwira Festival.
