The Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) has arrested a key suspect in the ongoing investigation into a kidnapping syndicate operating in the Wapuli area.

The arrest marks a major breakthrough after weeks of sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling the criminal network.

The development follows a December 6, 2025 operation in which police rescued a 42-year-old man who had been abducted and held by a four-member syndicate in Wapuli. During that operation, three suspects were arrested, while one accomplice managed to escape.

Police investigations revealed that the victim sustained life-threatening cutlass wounds while in captivity. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of GH¢100,000, of which GH¢90,000 was paid before the victim was released. Police later retrieved GH¢70,000 of the ransom amount.

Determined to apprehend all members of the syndicate, the PID intensified surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts to track down the remaining suspect.

That effort paid off in the early hours of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, when officers arrested Hoyeefe Amadu, identified as the fourth and key suspect, at his hideout in a village about 10 kilometres outside Watugu, a suburb of Gushegu.

The three earlier suspects are currently on remand in prison custody and are expected to reappear before the court as investigations continue.

Police say efforts are ongoing to fully dismantle the syndicate and prevent further criminal activity in the region.
