Police have arrested a former convict, Vincent Gbetorglo, in connection with a violent robbery and carjacking incident involving a taxi driver on New Year’s Day 2025.
Gbetorglo was apprehended on July 30, 2025, at the Accra Mall following intelligence gathered by investigators. During the arrest, four mobile phones were recovered from him—one of which was identified as belonging to Vic Martin Obeng, the victim of the robbery.
According to a complaint filed by Obeng at the CID Headquarters on January 6, the incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. on January 1. While operating an ash-and-yellow Toyota Corolla taxi (registration number GM 296-16), Obeng was hired by three young men at Madina Zongo Junction for a trip to Haatso.
However, upon reaching a section of the road near the Haatso ICGC Church, the men turned violent.
“They attacked me inside the vehicle, covered my face with my own shirt, and tied me up,” Obeng recounted.
A police statement noted that the attackers forced Obeng to lie on the back seat floor, took control of the vehicle, and made away with his daily sales, mobile phone, and GHC 13,000 in mobile money. He was later abandoned near Westland.
Following the report, a manhunt was launched, leading to Gbetorglo’s arrest. During interrogation, he claimed he purchased the mobile phones at Kwame Nkrumah Circle but failed to identify or locate the alleged seller.
Police records revealed that Gbetorglo is an ex-convict who was sentenced in 2011 by Cocoa Affairs Court 1 to 40 years in prison but was released in 2023 after a successful appeal.
Investigators believe the robbery is linked to a broader criminal syndicate that targets taxi drivers using abduction and violent tactics. Intelligence gathered so far suggests the involvement of other ex-convicts in a series of similar attacks.
Efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the stolen vehicle.
