Efforts by the National Peace Council to broker a peace pact between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the Akwatia by-election have suffered a setback, escalating political tension in the constituency.
At a meeting held at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Akwatia, the NPP refused to accept the NDC’s delegation, arguing that the party had sent constituency executives rather than national executives to sign the agreement.
NPP National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, accused the NDC of deliberately stalling the process, claiming the party was unwilling to fully commit to the peace declaration.
As a result, the anticipated signing ceremony facilitated by the Peace Council could not take place. Speaking after the aborted session, Peace Council Board member Sheikh Armeyaw Shaibu assured that the Council remains ready to mediate at any point before the polls.
The Akwatia by-election, already in the national spotlight, has been characterized by heated rhetoric and growing mistrust between the two main political parties.
