The Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei-Asare, has called on the management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to address procurement-related infractions identified in the 2025 Auditor-General’s Report and improve the quality of services at the facility.
She made the call on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, when the Centre appeared before the Committee to respond to issues raised in the report.
Ms Osei-Asare said several infractions had been recorded against UGMC, with a significant number relating to procurement procedures.
She urged management to take corrective measures to ensure the same issues do not recur in subsequent audit reports.
“A lot of infractions were noted at your facility, and many of them had to do with procurement. Please make sure you fix everything that you need to fix so that next year, we won’t have these infractions against UGMC,” she said.
The PAC Chairperson specifically encouraged the Centre to adopt the Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS), saying the platform would help guide its procurement processes and improve compliance with the relevant requirements.
“One most important thing is you getting onto the GHANEPS to enable you to use that for your procurement processes. That will guide you and prevent you from falling into some of these instances,” she added.
Beyond the procurement concerns, Ms Osei-Asare expressed dissatisfaction with what she described as a decline in service standards at the facility.
She charged the Chief Executive Officer to take steps to restore the protocols and practices that previously helped establish UGMC as a centre for quality medical care.
“I must also say that standards at UGMC are down, and Mr. CEO, you need to up your game at UGMC,” she said.
She stressed that patients must have confidence in the quality of treatment they receive, particularly considering the cost of services at the facility.
“The various protocols and all the other necessary things that used to be in place so that when you come to UGMC you know I have come to a place where I know I will get proper medical care for the money that I’m paying, so please let’s do something,” she added.
