PAC Chair defends Akufo-Addo government against economic mismanagement claim

Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and former Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare, has rejected claims that the Akufo-Addo government mismanaged Ghana’s economy.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Mrs. Osei Asare attributed the country’s economic performance during their tenure to sound management, despite global shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Responding to allegations by the Mahama administration, she highlighted key economic indicators, including inflation and GDP growth, to defend the previous government’s record.

“Every era has its challenges, but in 2022, inflation was 54%, and by the time we left office in 2024, we had reduced it to 23.8%. We inherited a growth rate of 3.6%, but we left it at 5.7%. In 2016, GDP was around 219 billion, and by 2024 it had reached 1 trillion,” she explained.

She added, “For no reason can anybody claim that we inherited a mismanaged economy.”

Mrs. Osei Asare argued that these figures reflect prudent management and firmly reject suggestions that the economy was in disarray during the Akufo-Addo administration.
