The overflowing refuse at the Santasi dump site in Kumasi, which posed an environmental health risk to residents, has finally been cleared following a report by Adom News.
The dump site had not been evacuated for nearly five months, resulting in heaps of waste overflowing onto nearby roads and exposing residents to poor sanitary conditions and potential public health risks.
The caretaker of the site had earlier threatened to shut down the facility if the waste was not cleared, warning that the situation had become unbearable as the refuse continued to spill onto the road.
Following Adom News’ report highlighting the sanitation challenge, authorities moved in to evacuate the accumulated waste, bringing relief to residents and restoring the site to a cleaner condition.
The caretaker, Emmanuel, popularly known as Baba, commended Adom TV for drawing attention to the situation, saying the media report played a significant role in prompting the swift response.
“Residents can now dispose of their waste without difficulty. Adom TV has really helped us. If the report had not been aired, poor sanitation could have overwhelmed the entire community because people would have had nowhere to dispose of their refuse. We are very grateful to Adom TV,” he said.
The Assembly Member for the Santasi Electoral Area, Kofi Yamoah, also expressed his appreciation, describing the evacuation as a major relief for both residents and the local authorities.
“Before the refuse was cleared, I had no peace of mind because of the health risks facing the community. Today, I am happy that the site has been evacuated and sanitation in Santasi has greatly improved. We sincerely thank Adom TV for highlighting the issue,” he stated.
Some residents also expressed gratitude to the authorities and Adom TV for their timely intervention, saying the evacuation has significantly improved sanitation in the community and reduced the risk of disease outbreaks.
