More than 60 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have rallied behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressing support for his anticipated bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
The MPs, on Thursday, June 19, 2025, held a closed-door meeting with Dr. Bawumia — the party’s 2024 presidential candidate — at his office.
This strong show of solidarity comes in the wake of the NPP’s announcement that it will hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.
The decision was made following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Tuesday, June 17, aimed at giving the party sufficient time to unite behind a new flagbearer ahead of the next general elections.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the party into the 2024 elections, is widely expected to contest again.
Sources familiar with the meeting say the MPs expressed their confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and encouraged him to officially declare his intention.
“We believe he remains the best hope for our party’s future, and we are ready to stand firmly behind him,” one MP who attended the meeting told journalists on condition of anonymity.
The gathering at the former Vice President’s office is being interpreted as an early signal of the momentum building around his expected candidacy.
Although Dr. Bawumia has yet to make a formal announcement, Wednesday’s show of support underscores his continued influence within the NPP and may serve as a launchpad for his 2026 campaign.
