Over 2,000 foreign beggars repatriated – Interior Minister

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has revealed that over 2,000 foreign nationals engaged in street begging have been repatriated to their home countries.

He said the exercise has led to a noticeable reduction in the number of beggars on the streets of Accra and other major cities.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the Government Accountability Series, Mr. Mubarak explained that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to sanitise public spaces and restore order in urban centres.

The Government Accountability Series is a platform introduced to update the public on the performance of the John Mahama administration and to promote transparency and civic engagement.

According to the Interior Minister, plans are underway to sustain the repatriation efforts and ensure that foreign nationals who engage in street begging are permanently removed from public spaces.

He also touched on recent successes by the Ghana Police Service in tackling illegal mining (galamsey) and armed robbery, noting that the Service has adopted a more proactive approach to crime fighting.

“The results so far are positive,” he stated, as he reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring public safety, law, and order across the country.
