Over 200 former MMDCEs endorse Bawumia’s candidacy

A total of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have rallied behind New Patriotic Party (NPP) hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressing support for his bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement came during a meeting on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel with the former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate.

The former appointees, who served between 2017 and 2024 under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, pledged not only their votes but also their time, resources, and energy to mobilise, campaign, and deliver massive support for Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy.

“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as Constituency and Regional Executives—some for over 16 years—we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs. We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana,” they declared.

The former MMDCEs emphasised that Dr. Bawumia represents the perfect blend of consolidation—upholding the country’s best legacy of development—and innovation, by introducing fresh ideas for a modern economy.

They added that his broad appeal across demographics, including the youth, the business community, and floating voters, gives the NPP its best chance in the 2028 elections.

“His credibility and integrity position him as the candidate to restore and sustain public trust in the NPP’s governance. Having campaigned across the length and breadth of this country in the 2024 elections, his name is known by all, his image can be identified by all, and his vision for Ghana is clear to all. That gives the NPP a competitive edge going into an election where our opponent must surely introduce a new candidate,” they touted.

The endorsement comes just days after Dr. Bawumia hosted over 60 NPP Members of Parliament at his campaign office, where they publicly declared support for his bid to become the party’s flagbearer.

Meanwhile, the NPP has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026. The decision was endorsed by the party’s National Council at a crucial meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in accordance with Article 13(1)(1) of the NPP Constitution.

So far, Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister and MP for Bosomtwe Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong have declared their intentions.

Although Dr. Bawumia has yet to make a formal announcement, the show of support underscores his continued influence within the NPP and may serve as a launchpad for his 2026 campaign.
