More than 100 traders belonging to the Peaceful Settlement Association in Ashaiman staged a peaceful demonstration on Monday, August 18, 2025, to oppose what they describe as an illegal eviction from land they claim to own, despite an ongoing court injunction.
The traders accuse the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) of attempting to hand the land over to a private developer, even though they hold official documents proving their ownership. Some have already lost shops and sources of income due to the dispute.
Speaking to the press, the Association’s spokesperson, Jeffery Eli, said members would resist any forced removal until the courts reach a decision.
“We are protesting the municipal executives for pressuring us into signing an unlawful agreement with a private developer. They called us into an office to force our consent so the land could be transferred. This land belongs to the Peaceful Settlement Association, and we have the documents to prove it,” Eli stated.
He added, “It is unclear why the MCE is attempting to intimidate us under the pretext of decongestion and trying to resolve this outside of court. The matter is in the legal system and should be settled there.”
