The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has dismissed allegations that it is selectively targeting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its investigations into alleged vote buying during recent party primaries.
According to the OSP, probes into both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries and the NDC parliamentary primaries in Ayawaso East are being conducted strictly in accordance with the law and based on available evidence, without political bias.
The clarification comes after criticisms that an earlier OSP statement appeared to focus primarily on the NDC case. The Office explained that the statement was presented sequentially: issues relating to the NPP were discussed in one paragraph, while those concerning the NDC were addressed in the next. This structure, the OSP stressed, was not intended to single out any party.
Reports from the Ayawaso East primary alleged that delegates received items such as 32-inch televisions, coolers, and boiled eggs from the camp of NDC candidate Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed. Similar allegations emerged from the NPP presidential primaries, where cash was reportedly distributed to delegates, causing dissatisfaction among those who did not receive payments.
The OSP noted that particular attention was drawn to one NDC candidate due to an alleged assault on an OSP officer during the electoral process.
Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, February 9, the Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the OSP, Sammy Darko, reiterated the impartiality of the investigations.
“It is purely that we stated in paragraph one as NPP and paragraph two as NDC. In paragraph three, we talked about what we are investigating in those instances,” he explained.
The OSP emphasized its commitment to pursuing all credible allegations of electoral corruption, regardless of the political party involved.
