One person has reportedly been shot in the leg during a confrontation involving a joint Military and Police team believed to be attached to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear.

However, reports by Accra-based Channel One News indicate that a group of youth engaged in mining activities at the site blocked the access road to prevent the security personnel from entering.

The youth allegedly accused the security team of selective enforcement, claiming the officers bypassed other mining sites before targeting theirs.

According to sources, the aggrieved miners argued that other individuals engaged in similar illegal mining activities were left untouched, leading them to accuse the security personnel of favouritism.

Tension remains high in parts of Kyebi, particularly the Zongo community, where some youth have reportedly gathered to demand justice over the incident.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at the Kibi Government Hospital.

The Military, Police and NAIMOS are yet to officially comment on the incident.
