A woman in her mid-50s is receiving urgent medical treatment at the Nkwanta St Joseph Catholic Hospital following an accident on the Nkwanta–Kpassa Highway in the eastern corridor of the Oti Region.

The vehicle involved, whose number plate had been removed, was travelling from Tamale to Hohoe in the Volta Region with passengers on board. It reportedly ran into a pothole, burst a tyre and sustained severe damage, leading to the accident.

All six passengers on board sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the St Joseph Catholic Hospital. The woman, who suffered severe injuries to her face and forehead, is reported to be in a critical condition.

Speaking to the media, some of the passengers disclosed that the driver was speeding towards Hohoe after receiving calls that passengers were waiting to travel to Tamale. According to them, the accident occurred after several complaints urging the driver to slow down.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta, Joseph Antwi Awal, has visited the hospital to obtain first-hand information about the incident and to check on the condition of the injured.

He used the occasion to advise drivers and other road users to be mindful of their speed, especially when conveying passengers, to help prevent such accidents.
