A violent clash over farmland between members of the Kwadwoti and Macheri Konkonba communities in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region has left one person dead and six others seriously injured.
The incident, which occurred in the communities of Wurenja and Beposo, also led to the burning of several houses belonging to the Nchumuru people, displacing residents and heightening tensions in the area.
According to local sources, the conflict was triggered by a long-standing dispute over the ownership and use of farmland between the two groups. The situation reportedly escalated into violence, resulting in casualties and destruction of property.
The deceased, whose identity is yet to be officially confirmed, is believed to have died from injuries sustained during the confrontation. The six injured persons are currently receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.
Security personnel have since been deployed to the affected communities to restore calm and prevent further violence. Authorities say investigations are underway to identify and prosecute those responsible.
Residents remain fearful in the aftermath of the clashes, with many calling for urgent intervention from government and traditional leaders to resolve the dispute and ensure lasting peace.
The incident highlights the recurring challenge of land disputes in parts of the Oti Region, which continue to threaten peace and development if not addressed through dialogue and effective conflict resolution mechanisms.
