A 19-year-old boy, Wilfred Awusi Ninson, has lost his life in a tragic accident at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) West Gate on the main Cape Coast–Takoradi–Accra Highway.

About four others sustained various degrees of injury in the accident, which occurred around 12:48 pm on Thursday.

The crash involved multiple vehicles, including a tipper truck with registration number GN 5710-19, a Honda CRV SUV with registration number CR 329-20, a Nissan Sentra saloon car with registration number CR 1756-12, and a tricycle commonly referred to as “pragyia.”

CCTV footage shows how the tipper truck rammed into over three vehicles at the intersection and a pedestrian who was waiting to cross the road.

In a statement, the Ghana Police Service explained that the tipper truck driver, Bright Essel, 29, was transporting sand from Bronyibima towards DVLA junction, Cape Coast.

Upon reaching a section of the road, he veered off his lane, ran over the kerb, and crashed into the Nissan Sentra saloon car driven by Kofi Kum, aged 57, the Honda CRV 4×4 driven by Anita Ansah, aged 37, and an Apsonic motor tricycle ridden by George Ayensu Peters, aged 26. The latter three were observing traffic from the nearside section of the road, preparing to join the highway.

Due to the impact of the crash, all the vehicles, including the tricycle, were severely damaged.

Two drivers and other victims identified as Charles Ayensu Peters, aged 47, Prince Anamag Baidoo, aged 27, and Wilfred Awusi were rushed to the University of Cape Coast hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, Wilfred was pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty.

The body of the deceased was deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The other victims remain in stable condition and are receiving treatment, while the tipper truck driver is in police custody assisting with investigations.
