The National Theatre of Ghana came alive on February 19 as JHS 1 and 2 students from across Greater Accra enjoyed a captivating adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, performed by the National Drama Company at the main auditorium.
The play, crafted by veteran actor and playwright Abeku Saigo, brought the classic story to life, leaving the young audience delighted.

“The best part was when Oliver asked for more food!” exclaimed one pupil. Another added, “I loved how Fagin taught the boys how to pick pockets.” Many students shared similar reactions, demonstrating their understanding of the story.

This collaborative production, organized by the National Drama Company, Ghana Education Service, and AIW, was made possible through the support of National Theatre Executive Director Mr. Henry Herbert Malm, who generously provided the venue free of charge.

As a prescribed text, Oliver Twist was brought off the page and onto the stage, helping students connect with the narrative in a fun and interactive way. Due to the large audience, the play was performed in four separate sessions.

The production received high praise from pupils, who lauded both the actors’ performances and the engaging storytelling. Comments such as “I understood everything!” and “It was so interesting!” were common.
The event was a resounding success, with Abeku Saigo and his team commended for making learning enjoyable.
