Old Tafo MP petitions Mahama over foreign gay couple’s ‘desecration’ of Independence Square

-

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has petitioned President John Mahama over what he describes as the desecration of the Independence Square in Accra by a foreign gay couple.

Mr. Assafuah is calling on the President to fulfil his campaign promise to sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law when elected.

His concerns follow the circulation of images on social media showing a South African queer couple, identified as Lue and Rue, holding hands, kissing, and draped in the Ghana flag at the Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

According to the couple, the photos are part of the #ShowGhanaLove campaign — an act of solidarity with Ghana’s LGBTQ+ community.

In a petition, Mr. Assafuah, who is also a lawyer, stated that the photos taken at such national monuments are more than a social statement. He described the act as a “moral affront” and a “spiritual insult” to Ghana’s conscience.

“This is not just a social issue; it is a moral assault and a spiritual insult to the conscience of our nation,” he wrote.

“These spaces are sacred. They are not to be turned into platforms for promoting acts that are fundamentally alien to our cultural, moral, and religious values.”

Mr. Assafuah also urged President Mahama to publicly condemn the incident and reaffirm his government’s commitment to Ghana’s traditional values.

His comments echo earlier sentiments from Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee and a sponsor of the Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.

The Assin South MP has accused President Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of encouraging what he calls a blatant disregard for Ghanaian cultural values.
