Old students petition PERSCO management over decline in NSMQ and academic performance

-

Some concerned old students of St. Peter’s Senior High School (PERSCO) have petitioned the school’s management board, demanding accountability and urgent reforms to restore the institution’s academic excellence and dominance in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

In the petition dated November 3, 2025, the alumni expressed concern over what they described as the school’s “persistent decline” in recent years, saying St. Peter’s has struggled to uphold its legacy as one of Ghana’s top science schools.

They cited the school’s recent performance in the 2025 NSMQ semi-finals against Opoku Ware School (OWASS) and Achimota School, where PERSCO failed to answer any questions in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics during the first round and finished with just 10 points — the lowest in its NSMQ history.

“This result is deeply embarrassing and a national disgrace for a science school of our calibre and legacy,” the statement read.

The group attributed the decline to poor strategy, lack of coaching support, and administrative neglect of the NSMQ programme.

They urged management to take inspiration from schools like PRESEC, Prempeh College, and St. Augustine’s College, which have bounced back from similar setbacks through structured planning and renewed commitment.

The old students emphasised that restoring St. Peter’s reputation requires deliberate reforms, effective leadership, and consistent investment in academic excellence.
