An off-duty ambulance officer’s swift response has saved a life following a head-on motorbike collision on the Dambai–Nkwanta road in the Oti Region.

Daniel Marfo, a Senior Emergency Medical Technician (SEMT) stationed at Kpassa in the Nkwanta North District, was visiting family in Dambai when he came upon the accident between Tutukpene and Kechiebi, two farming communities in the Nkwanta South Municipality.

Although he had no medical equipment such as oxygen supplies, suction devices, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), or stretchers to assist with breathing and circulation, Marfo relied on his training and improvised techniques to revive one of the victims.

He also directed bystanders to help place the injured persons in recovery positions.

Speaking to Adom News, Marfo said he subsequently assisted in transporting both victims to the Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital.

Unfortunately, one of the victims was pronounced dead on arrival.

The officer attributed the loss to the lack of additional medical personnel at the scene.

“If we were two officers, both victims would have been saved,” he said.

An Adom News investigation indicates that out of nine district ambulances in the region, only two are operational, including the advanced ambulance stationed at Worawora.

The shortage of functioning ambulance services is reportedly affecting emergency response efforts in the region.
