The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi West, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has shared details of the rescue efforts following the August 6 helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Ms. Appiah Kannin said her first call after hearing about the crash was to the Ghana National Fire Service.
“The first people I called were the fire service,” she said. “We knew we had to act fast.”
She explained that reaching the crash site was difficult due to bad weather.
“The road leading to the scene was very slippery because it was under construction, and it was raining that day. That affected us a lot,” she noted.
When asked if the rescue team was late, Ms. Appiah Kannin stressed that the outcome would likely have been the same.
“Whether they were late or not, by the time we got there, whatever had happened had already happened,” she said.
She confirmed that many rescue workers were present at the scene, working to respond to the tragedy.
“A lot of the rescue team were already around when we arrived,” she added.
The helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manean Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The crash has since plunged the nation into mourning.
