The Obuasi Local Prisons in the Ashanti Region has appealed to the general public for support with building materials to construct a training workshop aimed at equipping inmates with vocational skills.

The appeal was made during a donation exercise by Beatrice Awura Adwoa Hammond, who marked her 70th birthday by presenting food items and other essentials to inmates as part of the New Year festivities.

Speaking to Adom News, the Commander of the Obuasi Local Prisons, C/Supt. Francis D. K. Deku, expressed appreciation for the donation and said prison authorities are committed to training inmates in practical skills to enable them to earn a decent living and reintegrate responsibly into society after serving their sentences.

He noted that the proposed workshop would help inmates acquire employable skills and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

Beatrice Awura Adwoa Hammond, who is also the Lay Chairperson of the Methodist Church Ghana, Obuasi Diocese, said her gesture was inspired by biblical teachings that encourage love and care for the marginalised, including prisoners and the needy.

She donated items including parazone, liquid soap, rice, sugar, sachet water, and gari. According to her, providing inmates with skills training ultimately benefits society by reducing the temptation to engage in robbery or theft after release.

Also speaking at the event, Rev. Felix T. K. Danquah, Superintendent Minister of the Obuasi Wesley Cathedral of the Methodist Church Ghana, expressed concern over the rising crime rate in Obuasi, which he said has contributed to congestion in prison facilities.

He called for concerted efforts to address the root causes of crime, including violence, drug abuse, and other social vices, and urged religious leaders to play a more active role in guiding the youth and promoting positive social values.
