As part of its 125th anniversary celebrations, Obuasi Methodist Basic School has launched an appeal for urgent infrastructure support to improve teaching and learning conditions for its students.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Headteacher Yaw Okyere Ghansah highlighted the school’s pressing needs, including a new classroom block, an ICT laboratory, and a perimeter fence wall.
He revealed that the school, which has served the community for over a century, is currently facing severe infrastructural challenges due to its age.
In an interview with Adom News, Mr. Ghansah disclosed that some of the existing classroom blocks have deteriorated into potential death traps, posing a serious risk to students and staff.
He added that the school, with a student population of about 800, has only one toilet facility with six units, lacks an ICT lab, and has no fence to ensure safety.
“These conditions are deeply worrying and affect the quality of education we can offer,” he said. “We are appealing to the government, NGOs, philanthropists, and the general public to come to our aid.”
Also present at the event was the Obuasi West Municipal Education Director, George Alfred Koomson, who echoed the call for support. He emphasized that improved infrastructure can boost students’ morale and academic performance, citing research to support his claim.
Mr. Koomson appealed to old students and benevolent individuals to support their alma mater and help restore the school’s legacy as a center of excellence in education.
The 125th Anniversary and Homecoming celebration aims not only to reflect on the school’s long-standing contributions to education in Obuasi but also to mobilize resources for its future.
