The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, on Saturday, August 10, led a delegation to console families of 16 members of the Saviour Church of Ghana in Obogu, Asante Akyem South Municipality, who died in a fatal road accident.
The accident occurred on Monday, July 28, when a vehicle transporting congregants from the church’s annual gathering collided head-on with a fuel tanker around 2:30 p.m.
All 16 victims, members of the church’s youth ministry, died instantly, while four others sustained injuries. Some survivors are still receiving treatment, with church leaders reporting steady recovery.
During the visit, the NDC presented GH₵10,000 to the Saviour Church and an additional GH₵50,000 to the affected families to support funeral and related expenses.
The tragedy has left the Obogu community in deep grief, with several families mourning multiple relatives.
Addressing the congregation at the church’s Obogu branch, Mr. Nketia said the party felt compelled to reach out after learning of the incident from its liaison officer with the church.
“The news of this tragedy reached us through the party’s liaison officer with the church. We felt compelled to be here today to console the families and offer words of encouragement,” he said.
Acknowledging the magnitude of the loss, he added: “The pain is unbearable, especially for those who have lost two or three children.”
