The divisional chief of Gwira Banso in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region, Nana Ette Akrade II, has rewarded five residents with GH₵50,000 for their role in arresting illegal miners operating in the Gwira Banso Forest Reserve.
Illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, continues to wreak havoc on Ghana’s forests, rivers, and farmlands. Chiefs in mining communities have been urged to support government efforts to curb the menace.
Nana Ette Akrade II demonstrated his commitment by recognising the bravery of the residents, while the offenders are currently in police custody.
Speaking at a community gathering, the chief cautioned residents against engaging in mining activities in rivers and forest reserves, warning that offenders would face the full force of the law.
