The National Youth Authority (NYA) in the Ahafo Region has intensified efforts to combat drug abuse among young people.
In an interview with Adom News at Goaso, Sowah Nicholas, NYA Director for the Ahafo Region, expressed concern over the rising incidence of drug abuse among the youth.
The comments came during a sensitisation exercise organised by the NYA for senior high schools, including Ahafoman, Mim, and Sankore in the Asunafo North and Asunafo South Districts. Nicholas described the situation as alarming, highlighting the serious dangers posed by substance abuse.

As part of its response, the NYA is engaging young people to emphasise the importance of staying away from drugs. The sensitisation programme, which will be rolled out to all senior high schools in the region, is part of the “Red Means Stop” initiative aimed at preventing students from engaging in drug use during and after school.
The Assistant Girls Prefect of Mim SHS, Opoku Harriet, and the Senior Boys Prefect of Ahafoman Sec/Tech, Abdulai, commended the NYA for launching the “Red Means Stop” campaign, noting that it helps broaden students’ knowledge about the dangers of drug abuse, particularly the use of tramadol.
They also appealed to the government to properly resource state institutions tasked with apprehending individuals who sell these substances to the youth.
