NSMQ 2025: Ghana SHS reinstated into North East qualifiers after Sakogu withdrawal

Ghana Senior High School (Ghana SHS) has been handed a lifeline in the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) qualifiers following the withdrawal of Sakogu Senior High Technical School from the North East Regional contest.

The Tamale-based school was initially set to miss out on the national championship for the first time in its history after narrowly losing their Northern Region qualifier to Kalpohini SHS by just two points—scoring 35 against Kalpohini’s 37.

However, Sakogu SHTS’s withdrawal has opened up a slot in the North East Regional contest. Organisers have offered this vacant spot to Ghana SHS as the highest-scoring runner-up from the previous regional contests. This move is in line with NSMQ’s structure, which requires at least three schools per contest for fairness and competitiveness.

Ghana SHS will now join Bunkpurugu SHS and Walewale SHS in what is expected to be a fiercely contested qualifier as all three schools battle for a place in the 2025 national tournament.

This unexpected opportunity also gives Ghana SHS the chance to defend their Northern Zonal Championship title, which they currently hold.

The school has expressed determination to make the most of their second chance and reclaim their place on the national stage.
