The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has warned that it will take legal action against municipal assemblies that allow billboards to be erected on road medians, citing safety risks for motorists and pedestrians.
The caution follows a clearance exercise in the Ayawaso West Municipality on Tuesday, during which the Authority dismantled several unauthorized structures obstructing drivers’ visibility and increasing the likelihood of accidents.
Acting Director-General Abraham Amaliba noted that repeated reminders to assemblies had gone unheeded, forcing the NRSA to intervene. He added that advertisers would be required to cover administrative costs before reclaiming their billboards, and any unclaimed structures would be auctioned.
“We are hearing from the advertisers that it is the assembly that allows them to mount these billboards. Any assembly that allows for the erection of a billboard, we are going to sue for engaging in an unlawful act,” Amaliba said.
He further explained the process: “We have written to the assemblies to remove these billboards; they have failed, so we took it upon ourselves to remove them. Owners will have to pay for administrative costs to reclaim their billboards. If they fail to do so, we will auction the billboards to recover costs.”
