The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Paul Yandoh, has shared a light-hearted account of his cultural experiences during a recent trip to Accra.
His visit to the capital was to solidarize with NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
According to Mr. Yandoh, the delegation had anticipated a brief trip and made no accommodation arrangements, expecting to return to Kumasi the same day. However, circumstances extended their stay unexpectedly, forcing him to sleep in his car overnight.
He humorously recalled waking up the next morning unable to properly move his arms and legs due to an overwhelming number of mosquito bites. “The mosquitoes in Accra are something else,” he quipped, adding that they were far worse than those in Kumasi.
Mr. Yandoh also highlighted cultural differences in food, expressing surprise at how kenkey in Accra is typically served with only red or black pepper, compared to Kumasi where it is commonly paired with okro stew.
He noted a limited variety of meals and food vendors in Accra, contrasting it with Kumasi, where he said “you can find food joints at every corner.”
The NPP communicator also described ‘wele’ as unfamiliar, noting that waakye and wele seemed to dominate the menu options in the capital.
Summing up his one-week stay, Mr. Yandoh said the experience was a complete departure from what he was used to in Kumasi, describing it as a genuine cultural shock.
