Former NPP Chairman for the Fomena constituency, Kwasi Nti, has publicly endorsed Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum as the best candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections.
This open declaration has attracted public attention, especially as he is widely known to be politically aligned with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who was Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 elections.
In an interview with Barima Kofi Dawson on Nhyira FM’s Kuroyimunsem show, the former chairman dismissed other leading names such as Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, claiming they are all embroiled in internal disputes that would hinder the party’s progress in future elections.
“Dr. Adutwum is calm, uncontroversial, and not involved in any of the current infighting. He is the best candidate to restore unity and reposition the party after 2024,” Mr. Nti said.
The endorsement of Adutwum, instead of NAPO, raises questions about emerging fractures within the Ashanti NPP bloc ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Nti launched a scathing attack on the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, blaming him for the NPP’s perceived decline in its stronghold region.
“Wontumi is the reason the NPP is falling apart in the Ashanti Region. He talks too much, and most of it is unnecessary,” he stated.
Mr. Nti cautioned that making Wontumi a national chairman would be disastrous for the party with the allegation that Wuntumi used party resources for personal gain.
“To this day, the Ashanti Region has no NPP office. We hold meetings in hotels… He failed the NPP in Ashanti Region. If the party promotes him to the national level, it will collapse entirely,” he warned.
Kwasi Nti also expressed his personal disappointment with the NPP, claiming that his contributions had been overlooked and his investments destroyed.
“The NPP did not treat me well. They pulled down my storey-building shop and caused my downfall,” he said.
He has proposed that the party’s Electoral College be expanded to include all members who have served the party since 1992. According to him, this would restore trust among grassroots members and ensure that future leaders reflect the party’s foundational values.
