NPP Youth Wing hits streets over alleged state intimidation

The youth wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is holding a demonstration today, Tuesday, September 23, to protest what it describes as the misuse of state institutions to intimidate and harass opposition members.

Dubbed “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna,” the protest is being led by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha.

The march is scheduled to begin at Obra Spot at 6:00 a.m., continue to the Police Headquarters, where a petition will be delivered to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the National Security, and end at Jubilee House with another petition submitted to the Presidency.

The immediate cause of the demonstration is the recent arrest and detention of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman.

He was taken into custody on September 8 and charged with offensive conduct likely to breach the peace and publication of false news.

Though remanded for a week by the court, he was released on bail before the period elapsed.

The protest also reflects wider grievances within the NPP regarding what members describe as ongoing harassment of party officials, including regional executives like Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, and some party-affiliated social media activists.

Speaking ahead of the march, Salam Mustapha accused state institutions of engaging in “selective justice” and “state-sponsored intimidation” against NPP members.

He stressed that the protest demonstrates the youth’s determination to resist oppression.

He further confirmed that senior party leaders, including the Minority Leader and the full Minority caucus, will join the youth in delivering the petitions.
