NPP Youth calls for immediate investigation into GAF recruitment stampede

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for an urgent investigation into the tragic stampede at Accra’s El-Wak Sports Stadium, which claimed six lives during a military recruitment exercise.

In a statement signed by National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, the group expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged the Acting Minister of Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to conduct a thorough inquiry to determine the causes.

“This is very unfortunate and unacceptable in an era of advanced technology,” the statement read.

The group expressed concern over videos circulating on social media showing thousands of young Ghanaians struggling to secure advantageous positions.

The NPP Youth Wing questioned the adequacy of preparations and crowd management during the recruitment exercise. It also raised concerns about the absence of batching for applicants despite the large turnout and whether officers on duty handled the situation appropriately.

“There are too many questions that demand answers,” the statement added.

The group emphasised that the youth involved were simply seeking opportunities to serve their country and improve their lives — aspirations that should never end in tragedy.

The statement concluded by offering condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a swift recovery to those injured.
