Scores of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters thronged the Kumasi residence of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, on Friday morning following reports that the premises had been surrounded by armed National Security operatives and police officers.
The development sparked tension, prompting several senior regional party officials to visit in a show of solidarity.
According to his aide, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Chairman Wontumi was home with his wife and a domestic staff member when the security personnel arrived.
While the motive behind the operation remains unclear, Asiedu confirmed that Wontumi had been invited by police earlier in connection with ongoing investigations into the operations of Akonta Mining.
