Former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr Alex Ampaabeng, has declared his support for Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
His endorsement comes at a crucial moment as the party gears up to elect a new flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking during a media engagement, Dr Ampaabeng explained that his decision was influenced by the sentiments of the party’s grassroots and not by personal interests or disloyalty.
To me, whatever decision I am making is not based on betrayal. It is based on the information I have received — on the grounds that the people who sent me believe that bringing Kennedy Agyapong and giving him power is the right move, he said.
Dr Ampaabeng stressed that his loyalty to the NPP remains firm but believes Kennedy Agyapong represents the bold leadership and change the party and the country need at this time.
He added that his interactions with party members and ordinary Ghanaians across the country revealed a strong desire for decisive and courageous leadership — qualities he believes Agyapong embodies.
