The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially commenced the nomination process for its much-anticipated presidential primaries, marking the start of what is expected to be a competitive race for the party’s 2028 presidential ticket.

Aspiring candidates are expected to meet significant financial requirements, with nomination forms priced at GH₵100,000 and a filing fee of GH₵500,000—bringing the total cost to GH₵600,000.

The announcement was made by NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, during a press briefing in Accra on Monday, July 29.

“I am pleased to announce that we have officially opened nominations for our party members to become presidential candidates for the 2028 elections,” he stated, while outlining the timeline for the internal electoral process.

According to the party’s guidelines, the presidential primaries are scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026. The nomination window opened on July 29, 2025, and will close on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The financial commitments associated with the process have sparked conversations about accessibility and fairness.

While party officials argue that the fees are necessary to cover administrative and logistical costs, critics say they risk excluding competent candidates who lack the financial backing of major sponsors, potentially undermining grassroots participation.

The decision to begin the nomination process more than two years ahead of the general election reflects the NPP’s strategy to give its eventual flagbearer ample time to unify the party and prepare for the national campaign. Analysts believe this early start may help the party avoid last-minute divisions and present a united front ahead of the 2028 polls.
