NPP petitions IGP over alleged threats, assault during Akwatia by-election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate and prosecute National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman, Awudu Sofo Azorka, and Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer, Abdul Wahab Amadu, for alleged threats and acts of violence during the September 2 Akwatia by-election.

In the petition, signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party accused Mr. Azorka of threatening the life of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin in a widely circulated video and physically assaulting Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the NPP’s Third National Vice Chairman, at a polling station.

The NPP also alleged that Wahab Amadu threatened MPs Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Henry Nana Boakye, and Mr. Afenyo-Markin.

The party argued that such actions violate Ghana’s criminal laws and undermine the integrity of the electoral process, urging the police to arrest and prosecute those involved to prevent future political violence.

The petition further warned that failure to act decisively could normalize intimidation and erode public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
