The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding the immediate removal of heads of key state institutions responsible for port operations, maritime security, narcotics control, intelligence and customs, following the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of suspected cocaine linked to Ghana.
The National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, made the demand in an interview on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem amidst concerns over a series of major narcotics cases involving Ghana.
“The NPP demands the immediate removal of institutional heads and the ministers they report to. I saw a video where Honourable Muntaka was telling us that it appears the French authorities do not even want to collaborate with authorities here because they have lost confidence in them and that they don’t trust them; this statement alone should have triggered his removal or resignation. It is an indictment on Ghana and the government,” he said
His call follows the September 10 seizure by French customs authorities of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine concealed in a container carrying plastic waste that had arrived from Ghana at the Port of Dunkirk.
The consignment estimated to be worth about €225 million has raised questions about how it passed through Ghana’s port and security systems without being detected.
Nana B further accused the government of failing to take what he considers adequate action against officials within institutions responsible for preventing and detecting drug trafficking.
“The Director General, Ghana Ports and Habour Authority, he must be sacked. The Director General, Ghana Maritime Authority, this person must be fired. The Chief Executive Officer, Ghana Shippers Authority. This person must go. The Director General, the Nacortics Control Commission and the deputies must all go.
“National Security Coordinator, Director General, National Intelligence Bureau. The Managing Director, Ghana Airport Company Limited. The Commissioner General, the Customs Division, and the CID boss she has really displayed incompetence; all of them must be sacked,” he stated.
He argued that the fact that the shipment was intercepted only after leaving Ghana made the matter particularly serious.
“And the president is pampering them. Your Excellency, Ghana is embarrassed internationally; we need some proactive measures, some drastic measures.
“If we can have such a huge amount of illicit drugs moving freely, escorted by officials through our ports, and we only found out in France, all those officers along the chain of command must be sacked,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has also been pushing for the House to be recalled and for a bipartisan inquiry into a series of drug-related cases.
