The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Presidency to clarify the employment status of National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah following conflicting reports that he has either been dismissed or suspended over an alleged visa scandal linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The party’s Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, said Ghanaians deserved an official explanation of the decision, including the conditions under which any suspension or dismissal had been effected.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Mr Aboagye questioned the timing of the action against Mr Ampofo Ankrah, arguing that it came only after public outcry and pressure from the Minority in Parliament.
He said a petition had been submitted to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on September 8, 2026, but the President did not act until October 1, when calls for the NSA Director-General’s removal had intensified.
Mr Aboagye argued that the delay raised questions about the government’s commitment to accountability and transparency, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the decision needed to be explained.
He also pointed to what he described as inconsistent accounts from official sources regarding whether Mr Ampofo Ankrah had been dismissed outright or suspended pending investigations into the alleged irregularities in visa arrangements involving individuals seeking to travel for the 2026 World Cup.
“Some official account says that the National Sports Authority Director General, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah, has been dismissed. Others say he was suspended pending investigation. Which is which? Ghanaians deserve a clear statement from the Presidency,” he said.
The NPP communications director further urged the Presidency to publish the letter conveying the decision to Mr Ampofo Ankrah and disclose the specific terms attached to the action.
The controversy centres on alleged irregularities in visa arrangements involving officials and other individuals who sought to travel for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
