The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has removed former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and Agona West MP, Cynthia Morrison, from its official album for the January 31 presidential primaries.
In addition, the party has flagged 262 delegates linked to her in the Agona West Constituency as having forfeited their voting rights for the upcoming election.
The decision, taken by the NPP Presidential Election Committee, has been welcomed by some party supporters in Agona West, who view it as a firm message on the consequences of breaching party discipline.
However, some members of the public have expressed concern about what they see as rising internal tensions within the party, especially when compared with how similar situations are handled by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Party insiders say the move is part of efforts to restore order and discipline ahead of the crucial presidential contest.
Cynthia Morrison lost the NPP parliamentary primaries in April 2024 to Chris Arthur but later contested the general election as an Independent candidate. Her decision split the party’s votes in Agona West, ultimately allowing the NDC to win the seat.
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong explained that the action is guided by the party’s constitution. He cited Article 3(9)(1), which states that any member who contests an election as an Independent automatically forfeits their membership and becomes ineligible to vote in internal party elections, including the January 31 presidential primaries.
The Chair of the Presidential Election Committee confirmed that the enforcement of this rule is intended to strengthen party discipline and protect the integrity of its processes.
Meanwhile, information gathered by Adom News indicates that all 276 constituency albums have been submitted to the party’s regional electoral offices and are awaiting distribution to district offices ahead of the polls.
The final albums, together with updated lists of deceased and forfeited delegates, were submitted to the party’s national headquarters in Accra on January 24.
The NPP will hold its presidential primaries on January 31 to elect a flagbearer for the next general election.
