The NPP Coordinator and Chairman at Ayirekremu in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, Ndakeba, has expressed disappointment over what he described as a former government’s rejection of the community’s request to renovate teachers’ bungalows, calling it a missed opportunity to improve education delivery.
He said inadequate accommodation remains a major challenge for schools in Ayirekremu and nearby communities, making it difficult to attract and retain qualified teachers, particularly those posted from outside the area who often struggle to find safe and affordable housing.
According to him, the situation affects staff stability, continuity in teaching, and learning outcomes for pupils.
“Teachers need a conducive environment to live and work. Without housing support, postings become short-term and the children suffer,” he stated.
Ndakeba made the remarks during a visit where the Krachi East Municipal Assembly, together with the Member of Parliament, renovated a dilapidated teachers’ bungalow in the community.
He commended the Mahama Government for what he termed renewed attention to community challenges, and praised the MP and Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for responding to community concerns through practical interventions.
He urged stakeholders to prioritise teachers’ accommodation, stressing that improving teacher welfare is key to raising academic performance and expanding opportunities for the youth.
He also appealed to relevant agencies and development partners to work with the MP and MCE to sustain targeted support in underserved communities.
The MCE for Krachi East, Sarfo Nketia, assured residents that the Assembly would continue to prioritise education through infrastructure improvements to make teaching and learning more attractive.
He noted that from 2025 to date, the Assembly has undertaken projects including classroom renovations, construction of teachers’ bungalows, a six-unit classroom block, and the provision of furniture to enhance learning.
The MCE urged residents to continue to support the NDC government and the Assembly’s development agenda.
